Artist Statement:
This series of abstracted paintings is a deeper exploration of visual motifs from previous landscape works. By stripping away direct representational imagery of the land, the subject of each work has become the organic shapes and patterns within natural systems.
Colour, shape, line and texture drive these works through an intuitive process whereby many layers of oil paint are built up over a period of time, each layer drying before the next is applied. Previous layers are partially obscured as new ones are slowly built on top, gradually becoming a topographical surface rich in history.
As I work on each experimental piece over time, I start to build in references to imagery that I compile in visual reference libraries for myself- local landscapes, geological maps, insect colours, mineral formations, lichen textures, river tributaries, cloud patterns, biology diagrams and countless other sources I find visually captivating.
I am not intending these pieces as direct depictions of any one form or theme, but as visual compositions that revel in the rhythms, patterns and colours of the natural world.
